Adult Psychiatry

Our adult psychiatry program provides diagnostic evaluation and treatment for adults for a range of acute psychiatric disorders, including drug and alcohol addiction, depression and anxiety, borderline personality disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, eating disorders, and trauma-related mental illness. Our team conducts thorough assessments to help psychiatrists determine which treatments are the best fit for each individual. Assessment includes medical history, a physical, psychosocial behavior evaluation and more. Some of the treatments provided include crisis intervention, cognitive-behavioral therapy and detoxification.

Our evidence-based, highly structured and comprehensive treatment program includes group and family therapy, medication management and a variety of other unit activities including recreation and cognitive behavioral therapies. Treatment services are focused on helping patients develop the necessary coping skills to deal with the issues that led to the need for hospitalization. Case Management staff provides discharge services and arrange follow-up care in the community that is individualized for the special needs of each patient.

Child & Adolescent Psychiatry

A child or adolescent who may be experiencing disorders of thinking, feeling and/or behavior can benefit from visiting our behavioral hospital. Our psychiatrists use knowledge of biological, psychological and social factors to provide the best treatments possible. Therapy and treatments are held in a safe and welcoming environment to ensure that our young patients are comfortable. We treat children ages 3 to 12 and adolescents ages 13 to 17 whose acute symptoms require a safe and therapeutic environment.

Treatment plans include comprehensive psychiatric and medical assessments, group therapy, medication management, and family involvement. Therapeutic interventions include evidence-based theoretical approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and solution-focused therapy. Discharge planning is initiated at the time of admission and revised throughout the hospitalization. A written aftercare plan is developed with the participation of the child/adolescent and family. It includes recommendations for further treatment, and follow-up appointments are scheduled as needed.

Family Counseling

The stresses of everyday life, the work-life balance, financial worries, a crisis, behavioral challenges, or a mental health disorder can all place a strain on the family that may require help to resolve. Our family counseling program is designed to both challenge and support families as they work toward recovery. Family therapy can be useful during any situation that causes grief, anger, conflict, or stress. Counseling supports families as they learn new ways to communicate, work through problems, resolve conflicts, and develop skills to get through stressful times.

Geriatric Psychiatry

Our geriatric psychiatry treatment program is designed with people who have lived longer years in mind. For adults age 65 and over, personalized treatment is provided utilizing a multidisciplinary approach, including active participation in group therapy, individual therapy and activity therapy. Patients and families receive education on specific disorders, medications and effective coping strategies. Our objective is to assure the continuation of care and facilitate reintegration into the home or community.

Discharge planning is coordinated with regard to individual needs, with follow-up services as appropriate. Many of our patients “step down” to other levels of care offered at the DHR Health Behavioral Hospital, which includes Intensive Outpatient Therapy.

Psychiatric Evaluations

A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation may be needed to diagnose emotional, behavioral, or developmental disorders. An evaluation of a child, adolescent, or adult is made based on behaviors present and in relation to physical, genetic, environmental, social, cognitive (thinking), emotional, and educational parts that may be affected as a result of these behaviors.

Psychiatric Medication Management

Medication management is a level of outpatient treatment that involves the initial evaluation of the patient's need for psychotropic medications, the provision of a prescription, and ongoing medical monitoring related to the patient’s use of the psychotropic medication by a qualified physician/prescriber. Medication management includes monitoring, reconciling medications, and ensuring patients get the desired outcomes. It requires a thorough review of prescribed drugs and their possible side effects to create treatment plans and monitor their safety and efficacy.

Psychosocial Assessment

A psychosocial assessment is the evaluation of emotional, psychological, social and behavioral well-being by a medical professional. The assessment may involve face-to-face interviews and standardized tests (written and verbal) in order to get a complete understanding of the person’s behaviors, thoughts, emotions, and strengths. The psychosocial assessment aids in the appropriate diagnosis (if warranted) so the medical professional can then develop a treatment plan.
