Edinburg, TX— Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Health System (DHR) and the Rehabilitation Hospital at Renaissance recognized April as Limb Loss Awareness Month. The month is dedicated to increasing awareness about limb loss and encouraging people with limb loss or limb difference to speak up and advocate for their right to appropriate medical care.
The Rehabilitation Hospital at Renaissance signed a petition in favor of recognizing April as Limb Loss Awareness Month. The hospital received a letter from Texas Governor Greg Abbott that proclaimed April as Limb Loss Awareness Month in Texas. This proclamation recognized the limb loss community and the impact that limb loss has on the lives of family, friends, and caregivers. Limb Loss Awareness Month provided an opportunity for amputees to come together and offer support to one another. The month of April also served as a platform to educate the community about limb loss prevention and to raise awareness about issues affecting amputees.
On April 29th, the amputee patients at the Rehabilitation Hospital at Renaissance participated in “Show Your Mettle Day.” On this day, all amputees are encouraged to show off their devices, whether it be a wheelchair or a prosthesis, on social media to increase awareness.
Every first Wednesday of the month at 5:45 PM, the Rehabilitation Hospital at Renaissance provides a free support group for amputees. This is the only amputee support group that is offered in the Rio Grande Valley and . The support group has health care professionals speak about different topics every month. Topics have included phantom limb pain, skin care, community resources and others.
