Edinburg, TX— The Renaissance Transplant Institute at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Health System is the only facility in the Rio Grande Valley that currently offers kidney transplant services. Without an active transplant program in the community, most individuals have had to travel outside of South Texas to receive all of their organ transplant medical care, including pre- and post-operative treatment. Now, patients no longer have to leave the Valley, but can receive all of their assessment, kidney transplant surgery, and follow up visits close to home.
In December 2016, the Renaissance Transplant Institute received United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) and Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) approval for both its Kidney Transplant and Kidney Living Donor programs. UNOS manages the United States organ transplant system and approval from the network signifies that DHR meets all institutional and personnel qualifications required to perform kidney transplant surgeries. As the only approved transplant surgical program in the Rio Grande Valley, UNOS and OPTN approval is a significant milestone for the Renaissance Transplant Institute and our region.
South Texas is home to a large Hispanic population, which makes the need for organ donation even greater. Minorities such as Hispanics, Native Americans, African-Americans, and Pacific Islanders are all at a greater risk for developing chronic conditions that affect the liver, heart, and kidneys. There is also a greater diversity of blood types within these populations, which makes the need for organ donation even more critical. DHR recognized the need for transplant patient services and worked to establish a world-class facility that could care for the needs of the local community.
The Renaissance Transplant Institute treats disease and disorders of the kidney, liver, pancreas and hepatobiliary system, including the gallbladder and bile ducts. With a team of renowned transplant nephrologists, transplant hepatologists, and transplant surgeons, the institute covers a wide spectrum of specialized patient care. In addition to pre- and post-operative care, our team offers disease management options and surgical services.
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance continues to push boundaries of new discoveries, deliver excellent health care in a compassionate and comfortable setting, and advance the fields of kidney disease, liver disease, pancreatic disorders, and organ transplantation into the future through research and education.
